    Biography

Andy Jenks is an Instructor and PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware. He has also worked as an interdisciplinary teaching assistant with the Departments of Women and Gender Studies and Africana Studies, and as a discussion facilitator within the Disability Studies Minor at the University of Delaware. As a 2016 Paralympic Medalist involved in disability sport from an early age, his work focuses on the improvement of social conditions for people with disabilities. Located at the intersection of disability and politics, Andy’s research and teaching efforts explicitly attempt to put these fields into conversation with one another. His dissertation project is a study of the formation of disability rights in the US and Canada and tries to reconcile the complexities of the disabled identity with the legislative, legal, and social processes involved in the formation of rights. Additionally, his research is aimed at the creation of more accessible and inclusive public spaces for people with disabilities as well as others who have been historically marginalized through the socio-legal studies utilizing primarily qualitative methodology. His teaching philosophy is informed by tenets of Universal Design and his pedagogy is informed by best practices learned through engagement with the University of Delaware’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTAL).
