Study politics and society in Ghana, an emerging democracy in West Africa. Enjoy a remarkable history and rich culture, a vibrant literary and arts scene, active social media presence, delicious cuisine, political and social activism, education and entrepreneurialism and more.
Based in the capital city Accra, the seat of government and home to four million people, we will visit universities, museums and galleries, cultural centers and heritage sites, markets and malls, startups, beachfront attractions and more. In addition to visiting sites in and around Accra, we will travel to Cape Coast and Elmina where you will learn about aspects of pre-colonial West Africa and the transatlantic slave trade; in a visit to Kumasi you will learn about Ghana's Ashanti kingdom and the enduring power of ethnic allegiances and traditional practices. In a visit to Ho in the Volta Region you will meet members of Adanu and rural communities working to improve area schools.
