Haley Magwood didn’t always dream of attending law school. The Ellicott City, Maryland native entered college with a primary interest in history.
“I was curious about people and power – moreover, how people rise to power, energize the world and create change,” Magwood says. “I was also interested in self-discovery and I looked to Black American Studies for guidance. I was given the analytical tools to question every political class I encountered, and I was able to challenge and confront my courses and interests within an Afrocentric perspective.”
It was advice from an instructor, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies Jorge Serrano, that first inspired her career path when he asked her if she ever considered attending law school. “He noticed that I had a talent for writing and a skill for articulating my thoughts to others,” she says. “Until then, I had only thought about attending law school briefly, but after joining the Legal Studies department, I took the path more seriously.”
While at UD, Magwood kept active on campus with a slew of activities and organizations, including the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Each One Reach One Mentorship Program, the Center for Black Culture, the National Society of Leadership and Success, Afrodisiac Dance Troupe and Blue Hen Leadership Program.
